More than words, they are perspectives.

I recently hopped on the Rspec train, and let me tell you, it’s a slick ride. There is, however, an ill thought floating around that states, roughly, that Rspec is simply another collection of words to describe test-driven development. This notion is both true and false.

It’s true because if you choose to see thing X from the perspective of thing Y, X will probably look like a slightly modified Y.

It’s false because with new words comes new perspectives, and perspective changes things. And once you change your perspective, you are no longer limited to the language and thoughts you formerly used to describe your world.

“Describe” and “test” are semantically similar, but it’s where the similarties end that new thinking begins, and that’s where you want to be. With the new thinking.

So the next time you encounter a technique or technology that appears similar to something you already do, take a closer look. Dabble and flirt with the language this new thing employs to see if it changes your perspective. You might be pleasantly surprised.
